Classes with Navaro:      Drumming in Vancouver

                        Picture
_Current Class Session, RHYTHMIC UNIVERSE  - at Top.  Previous Class Sessions below.

In classes we enjoy a community space of making music where parts are given according to your level. Beginners are welcomed, intermediate to advanced players are challenged and offered leading parts. Whether you are a serious student of music, or a playful soul looking to be part of a drum circle, there is a place for everyone.

In a typical series we play traditional tribal music pieces with interlocking parts and often chants.  As well, we learn foundations of rhythm, techniques of drumming and percussion, and how rhythmic parts interact. We take a step by step process:  We learn parts, put them together, add breaks and transitions, sing, and play each piece for a long time, analyzing, understanding, and embodying its layers: Counts, pulsations, patterns, relationships.
Through doing this foundational work, the rhythms reveal their energies.

Traditional drum pieces are Mandalas of Sound.

As we play, we embody the music and receive its benefits.  Rhythm and chant are human designs that reflect the living tapestry of creation. They help us to focus, expand and transform consciousness.  As well, they are vehicles through which we can cultivate and direct our own powerful energies. Rhythm aligns us with our human, global, and cosmic community.  There are often chants that accompany the music.  We also learn about the history and origins of each piece. And finally, we play with awareness to the music's effects.  Being in rhythm develops one's body, mind, and energetic systems.

I look forward to journeying with you over the next 2 months, in this time of 2012 revelation and acceleration.

Valentine's Day Sonic Healing Session:  Love-Drum for the Earth
On Feb 14, the Drum Class will play in honor of World Sound Healing Day:

Valentine's day this year happens to fall on my ongoing Tues Drum Class night.  I'm not much into commercially dictated holidays, but I am delighted to turn the focus of Valentine's Day in this direction.  Bring someone you love to class - a friend or partner :Two can come for $25 instead of $40

In this Love-Drum Session, we will chant and drum to focus our energies and generate love for our gorgeous, beloved planet Earth. This will be a beautiful sonic healing session.

We make a critical difference by holding attention for Gaia in this way.  The Ancients knew this, and held regular ceremony for that purpose.  The many Standing Stones and ancient mound structures in Britain, for example, were energy focalizers placed on critical ley lines and Earth pressure points, to balance and heal.  Aboriginal people in Australia had their Song Lines, which arise from planetary meridian lines.  They believed the Earth was singing Creation into being at every moment, and they supported that process with their music, dance, and ceremony.

We have all but forgotten such practices, but memory of our ancient practices are re-awakening, at this critical time of 2012.  Come out to drum on Tues to support planetary healing.

Regular Drop In Price for one is $20. Bring a friend or loved one for only $5  The total price for 2 people:  $25.  (instead of $40).

African Chants and Rhythms are a Tribal Technology that synchronize our physical and electrical pulsations.  As brain and body waves are slowed and energized, we achieve peace, exuberance and clarity.  We align with Earth and the natural cosmological world of cycles.

                        DRUMMING, PULSATION, HEALING, & COMMUNITY

                        2 Drum Workshops:  Thurs Sept 22 & Thurs Oct 27, 7-9pm  At 1461 Venables. $20 per workshop

Each night can be taken individually, or do both workshops for a deeper exploration of the material.  We will learn Tribal rhythms and chants, and practice technical aspects of rhythm to understand the principles of pulsation, connection, and healing within the music.  These are basic energies that tribal people recognize and use rhythm for.  These things are not normally verbalized.  These workshops explore the music and its purpose in depth, while also teaching rhythm and drum technique.
